RoboForm vs Dashlane security

Both providers document zero-knowledge designs and local encryption before vault data reaches their servers. RoboForm documents AES-256 encryption, PBKDF2-SHA-256 key derivation, and local decryption. Dashlane describes a patented zero-knowledge architecture and encrypted synchronization across authenticated devices.

RoboForm’s distinctive option is local-only mode for eligible paid desktop use. Dashlane instead emphasizes proactive protections including personalized security alerts, Dark Web Monitoring, phishing alerts, and passwordless login for eligible new users.

No design removes risks from an unlocked compromised device, malicious extension, weak account password, or mishandled export. Use strong account authentication, protect recovery materials, keep devices updated, and treat audits as evidence about reviewed scope rather than guarantees.

Free, Premium, and family plans

RoboForm Free stores unlimited passwords on one device. Premium expands access across supported devices and adds cloud backup, sharing, emergency access, monitoring, web access, and eligible local-only mode. RoboForm Family provides five Premium accounts.

Dashlane’s current documentation says it no longer offers or sells Dashlane Free. New users can try selected Premium features for 14 days. Premium provides unlimited passwords, passkeys, and devices, secure sharing, monitoring, phishing alerts, and a VPN. Friends & Family covers the plan manager plus nine other members; the VPN applies only to the plan manager.

Both providers use annual billing for current personal subscriptions. Compare the full initial charge, renewal price, refund conditions, family seats, and exact inclusions rather than relying only on a monthly equivalent.

Form filling, passkeys, and two-factor authentication

RoboForm’s strongest differentiator is its long-standing identity and form-filling system. Dashlane also autofills logins, payments, IDs, and personal details, but its current positioning leans more heavily on active monitoring and phishing protection.

Both services document passkeys and TOTP support. Either can therefore hold a site password and generate that site’s verification code. Read what passkeys are and compare separate authenticator apps before consolidating credentials.

Convenience affects factor separation. If a complete vault compromise exposes both a password and its TOTP seed, the two factors no longer provide the same separation. A separate authenticator can preserve more independence.

How to move from RoboForm to Dashlane safely

  1. Keep RoboForm accessible until the new vault is verified.
  2. Export from RoboForm only on a trusted, updated computer.
  3. Rename the RoboForm CSV column Pwd to Password, as Dashlane currently instructs.
  4. Import with Dashlane’s web app or Android app; its documentation says iOS and macOS apps cannot perform this CSV import.
  5. Review representative logins and Secure Notes, then separately check identities, passkeys, TOTP items, and attachments.
  6. Delete the unencrypted CSV and any backup or recycle-bin copies after verification.
  7. Confirm authentication and recovery before uninstalling the old manager.

Dashlane says RoboForm exports include logins and Secure Notes but not every other data type. Information it cannot map may appear in notes, so do not assume the migration is complete without checking.
